It's the disease Maria had that Prof. Gerald was trying to cure, as I recall.
N. I. D. S.: "Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome"; think of AIDS except for the neurological system. Rather than attacking white blood cells and destroying them, NIDS attacked neurons (nerve cells) which could cause the affects of autism. Autism, last I checked, is a neurological disorder so it would make sense if they had the same symptoms. But it deals with social interaction rather than the deterioration of body systems...
Whatever the case, in my analysis of the Sonic series, it would make sense as to why Maria was never on Earth; if it does have the same affect as Autism, she'd be a bit anti-social (keep in mind I'm no expert so if I'm wrong feel free to yell at me to get it right ^^; ) or, if it's a disease like AIDS, people wouldn't know how it was contracted (like some people now) and thus her grandfather took her and raised her on the ARK.
As I said, I've no idea in the end; just a theory. (Actually... I should probably use that for my fanfic if I ever need to explain Ivory's relationship to everyone on the ARK. xD)

Anyway, as it turns it isn't fictional; I just looked up the acronym "NIDS", and it's a syndrome. Meaning it represents lots of diseases dealing with the neurological and immune system. So, in theory, Maria could have had a completely made up disease (like my old theory above) or any disease involving the deterioration of the neurological or immune system-- meaning that, yes, she could have had autism. Or, perhaps she had ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis,) more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, which is the deterioration of the neurological system from the legs up. You lose use of your legs, then your abdominal section, then your arms... until it reaches your brain and you can't breathe or talk and die. If you want more information, check out the wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Gehrig%27s_disease I don't think that was the case, though; last I checked, Maria was fully capable of running and walking up to the point she died. Then and again, that's a real-life example; maybe Sonic Team made it a completely different disease on its own. Anyway, neurological diseases and dysfunctions are fascinating to look up. If I wasn't so squeamish about the brain, I'd probably research into all sorts of neurological problems on my free time.

Alas! We've only got French and Spanish at my school.
Well, and Chinese, but I hear that's harder than the ARK stages in Shadow the Hedgehog. >_>;

That's because... well, I don't know why. This happens with all of our conversations, doesn't it? Which is what I love so much about this place. ;v;
